HANNA Winery was founded in 1985 by Dr. Elias Hanna, a world-renowned cardiac surgeon, who was eager to find a place in the country to continue the farming heritage of his upbringing. Dr. Hanna's oldest daughter Christine has run the operations of the winery for 20 years and has had the pleasure of living in Sonoma all of her adult life. As a result, Christine Hanna has come to embody the Sonoma Valley lifestyle, epitomizing the region's DIY approach to food, wine, gardening, design and entertaining. Following the release of her cookbook, "The Winemaker Cooks," she continues to create and promote her recipes alongside her food-friendly wines.

Today, Hanna owns 600 acres of land in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and the Mayacamas Mountains. Under Christine Hanna's guidance, the winery has evolved into an estate philosophy that blends the viticultural diversity of fruit cultivated in its four vineyard estates in unique appellations. With the help of Winemaker, Jeff Hinchliffe, HANNA credits award-winning wines vintage after vintage delivering consistent quality to the consumer.

HANNA is most commonly known for its Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, as well as its Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. HANNA Winery also produces other varietals such as Zinfandel from the steeply-terraced hillsides of Bismark Mountain Vineyard.

WINEMAKER JEFF HINCHLIFFE
Jeff Hinchliffe first became interested in winemaking as an undergraduate student studying brewing science at the University of California, Davis. After a few winemaking courses and a job as a laboratory assistant in the enology department, he decided to make the switch from a career in beer to wine. "The creativity and inevitability of winemaking won me over." Jeff graduated with a degree in fermentation science with an emphasis in enology in 1983. Jeff honed his winemaking skills with stints at Christian Brothers in Napa, Hidden Cellars and Gabrielli in Mendocino. In the spring of 1998, he joined Hanna Winery, and has been making award-winning wines ever since.

Bismark Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Hanna's Bismark Mountain Ranch is high above the City of Sonoma and San Pablo Bay.  The climate is windy and surprisingly cool which produces grapes with intense, deeply concentrated flavor.  The unique terroir is both fierce and alluring. The 2007 season marked a return to near normalcy after the remarkably challenging 2006 vintage. A dry winter and spring were followed by a moderate June and July and early August.  Bud break was early, and disease pressure was low. Frost was absent, and as a result we entered summer with very dry ground. An August heat spike had winemakers talking about plummeting acids and early harvest. Overall, the fruit was evenly ripened and very clean.

Bismark Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The Bismark Mountain Ranch is high above the city of Sonoma and San Pablo Bay.  Here on the southwestern flanks of the Mayacamas Mountains we grow 27 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon amid outcroppings of Rhyolite.  HANNA began planting in 1991, and continue to fine tune the mix of cultivars to this day.  This is vineyard has steep ground; shared with Creosote bush, Digger pine, coyote and mountain lion. Windy, and surprisingly cool, Bismark grudgingly produces grapes with an intense, deeply concentrated flavor. Bismark’s unique terroir is both fierce and alluring. The 2012 growing season was the most moderate in the past five years. Mild spring weather was conducive to outstanding fruit set, and a consistently warm, dry summer permitted the grapes to size-up and steadily ripen. A heat spike in early October pushed the ripeness envelope.

Our Sauvignon Blanc grapes were almost entirely hand harvested at night using tractors fitted with lights. An exception was Crinella which we machine harvested at night. The hand-picked fruit was picked into half-ton bins and hauled the short distance to the winery in the morning. At this point we hand sorted the fruit using a custom made sorting conveyor. The fruit was then destemmed and pressed while still cold. A combination of inoculated and indigenous fermentations was used. The Malolactic fermentation was conducted early to prevent development of buttery aromas. Our Sauvignon Blanc is aged on the lees until three to four weeks before bottling. This keeps the wine fresh and bright. Bottling takes place from November through May at monthly to bi monthly intervals.
