1961 was the magical year of Berlucchi's first wine; it was the decade of optimism, experimentation and exploration. Berlucchi's flagship Franciacorta Brut & Rose wines as well as two new Cuvées, Cuvée 61 Brut & Rose marketed exclusively in the U.S., are fashioned from the classic sparkling wine grapes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. 

Guido Berlucchi and Franco Ziliani are unanimously given the credit for having been the first to understand the winegrowing potential of Franciacorta. But in the realm of ideas, paternity and primogeniture rarely guarentee survival or success: what is also needed is determination and ability to keep in step with new developments, changing consumer tastes as well as viticulture and winemaking innovation.

As the #1 Metodo Classico sparkling wine producer in Italy, with over 40% market share, Berlucchi is unique in that it produces its wines in the classic Champagne method modeled after the famous Méthode Champenoise or Metodo Classico in Italian. The primary philosophy guiding this winery was laid out by the founder Franco Ziliani: produce wines of quality, at affordable prices, in quantities that will make them easily available in every region of Italy, and to a broad group of serious consumers.

Today Berlucchi has become synonymous with classic method sparkling wine that rivals the French. Italy's favorite sparkling for aperitifs, festive toasts or simply enjoyed with meals.

Berlucchi has undertaken a multi-year total renovation of its estate vineyards, with the vines being replanted in accord with the most advanced viticultural practices. Yields are set at about 100 quintals per hectare, and at a much higher vine density per hectare, 8,000 to 10,000, compared to the 2,500 in the past. With this new approach, each vine and its root system is ripening only 4-5 bunches, compared to the previous 16-20; this represents the perfect ripening of just over a kilogram of grapes, with properties ideal for the production of a great wine.
