Protea is a property owned by Johann Rupert owner of Cartier, Alfred Dunhill, Piaget, Baume Mercier, and Mont Blanc among other luxury brands. I mention this in order to give you an idea for what his objective is for Protea wines. It was under his guidance in 2005 that a complete overhaul of the family estate was conducted, which resulted in one of the most state-of-the-art wineries in South Africa. Rupert is on a mission to make wines that dare to be exotic and beautiful, in every way imaginable. “We've broken new ground by offering our uniquely delicious wines in designer-crafted bottles you won't forget – and won’t want to discard.”
The inspiration for our brand is the Protea (PROH-tee-uh). Haven't heard of it? It's South Africa’s national flower, and it got its name from the shape-shifting Greek god Proteus because it comes in such a dizzying diversity; each blossom you spot is somehow a little more exotic and special than the last one.
Kind of like Protea wines – and bottles.
To make Protea Chenin Blanc, the winemakers step smartly aside and allow the essence of the remarkable, too often underappreciated Chenin Blanc grape arrive in the glass with rich fruit and verve. Protea Red combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz and strives for complexity and intensity while never, ever succumbing to the pitfalls of the Big Indistinct Red; let purity reign!
How to present such dazzlers? A standard pretty label stuck on a standard boring bottle wouldn't do.
So Johann sought out designer Mark Eisen, who after conquering the fashion industry turned his attention to artistic glass. Using an advanced screen application in which nontoxic ink fuses with the glass at a very high temperature, Eisen was able to transfer his evocative designs directly onto and wrapped around the bottle.
The paisley and Cape Dutch themes on these releases speak to Protea’s South African roots, but more than that they transform the bottles from mere containers to objects of beauty and contemplation. A bottle of Protea won't just sit on your table, it will enliven the table – and probably spark more than a little conversation.
As special as they are, Protea bottles are the ultimate in green: Sure, recycling is good, but reusing is better. Your bottle of Protea will be emptied at the table, with great pleasure, and then take on new life holding floral displays, or olive oil, or any favorite beverage.
