The cover of the November issue of Tasting Panel magazine features Terlato Wines Chairman Tony Terlato and a three-page feature story entitled, “Reach for the Stars” by one of the country’s best-known wine writers, Anthony Dias Blue. The story traces Tony’s career and explains how his leadership and wine expertise helped Terlato Wines become one of the world’s most important importers and marketers of luxury wines.
The magazine includes a recount of a very unique blind wine tasting event that Tony conducted at Eleven Madison Park in New York City for 20 top sommeliers in addition to high-end wine retailers, among them, Sherry-Lehmann, Zachy’s and Acker Merrall & Condit’s. At the tasting, Tony divided guests into four tables and each table blind-tasted 11 wines: five white and six red. Some of the wines tasted were: GAJA Sori San Lorenzo 2006; Chanson Clos du Mouches 1er Cru 2009; Chapoutier Le Pavillon Ermitage 2007, Terlato Block 9 Syrah 2007 and; Sohm & Kracher Grüner Veltliner Vineyards of Lower Austria, Weinvertal 2011. The guests were asked to identify the country of origin, the grape varietal and the vintage.
Following that tasting, Tony directed a double-blind wine tasting and asked the guests to rank the wines in their order of preference. The wines in the double-blind tasting were vintage 2008 of Opus One, Silver Oak, EPISODE, Chateau Margaux and Dominus -- certainly a selection of important wines. Opus One finished with 67 points and EPISODE 2008 and Chateau Margaux tied for second, with 68 points each. The most first-place votes (eight) went to EPISODE 2008.
