“Tony Terlato is, and has been for some time, one of the most important people in the wine business. It seems to come to him naturally.” That’s the first line of the Fall cover story of In the Mix magazine, one of the wine and spirits industry’s most influential publications. Inside is a 12-page story on Terlato Wines Chairman Anthony Terlato entitled, “Tony Terlato: The Story of an American Wine Icon.”
Managing Editor Mike Raven follows Tony’s illustrious career through the decades, from his father’s wine store on the north side of Chicago to friendships formed with icons of the wine industry like Robert Mondavi, Alexis Lichine and Frank Schoonmaker and the creation of what many refer to as “The World’s Greatest Wine List” – the wines of the Terlato portfolio. The story emphasizes Tony’s focus on quality in all aspects of his career, from the wines he discovered and sold to the way he practices business.
The interview portion of the article is like a tour of the Terlato portfolio, as Mr. Raven gets Tony’s personal insights on how the portfolio was assembled to include the highest quality wines from the best appellations and producers in the world. In closing, Tony acknowledges the longevity of some of Europe’s oldest wine families, noting, “I have the benefit of both of my sons being with me, with the same plan …. We have just entered our fourth generation, with my granddaughter Jo joining the company… We have 31 generations to go.”
