Mount Benson Vineyard

Michel Chapoutier, the legendary Rhône Valley wine producer, has embarked on an exciting new project. Seeking excellence in the land Down Under, Chapoutier has established Domaine Tournon in the state of South Australia. The cool weather patterns and unique soil in this part of the world are an ideal place for the development of Chapoutier’s biodynamic winegrowing philosophy, and of extending Rhône traditions.

The Domaine Tournon vineyard is located in the relatively new wine-producing region of Mount Benson. This slope lies between the coastal towns of Robe and Kingston within the Limestone Coast zone, which is in the southeastern area of South Australia. Comprised of 247 acres, the estate currently has 124 acres in production. The 2004 vintage is the brand's inaugural vintage in the United States.

Mount Benson is known for its prized limestone soil and ideal maritime climate, indicating that it’s poised to emerge as one of Australia’s best Shiraz wine regions. The mild and dry weather in late summer and early autumn allows for full ripeness, which enhances aging ability. Low yields and traditional French vinification has produced powerful yet elegant wines, ideal for both cellaring and accompanying food.
